Dan Martin on learning from his worst seasons, retiring on his own terms, and his new book, Chased by Pandas

It was, in his own words, almost inevitable that Dan Martin would pursue a cycling career.

The Irishman spent many an afternoon watching his father, Neil Martin, race on TV, surrounded by cycling magazines on the coffee table and a family that shared a kindred passion for the sport.

‘I just enjoyed riding,’ he says, ‘then I started to do a little bit of racing and ended up being quite good. I think the mental strength and instinct, well, I’d been watching cycling since I was born so I had a lot of experience before I even started racing.’
